really liked it
bookshelves: end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it, young-adult
Read in January, 2008

I'm a sucker for apocalypse novels. I even liked "The Girl Who Owned a City", until I reread it recently and discovered that as a 9 year old, I somehow totally missed the heavy-handed libertarian indoctrination. But anywhere a kid has to go out there and survive, I'm game.

I'd recommend this to any teenager, and it's still a good quick read for an adult. It tangles with a few different post-apocalypse scenarios, there's a healthy dose of fear due to lawlessness and disease, and spoiled kids quickly learn priorities and responsibility. It's not realistic by a long shot, of course, but it's realistic enough for a young teen novel -- far better than most, I'd guess. Not hokey, either. Parents aren't perfect, and kids aren't either, and the end of the world doesn't change that.
