I read this earlier in the summer when I was trying to think seriously about opening an independent bookstore. Epstein gives good news insofar as he assures us that the "paperless revolution" is not about to actually happen, and even that big chain bookstores are going to find themselves losing out to smaller, leaner operations as buyers get more niche-oriented, retail rental prices stay prohibitive and we move (sooner or later) into the age of print-on-demand. I wouldn't go so far as to say Epstein makes opening a new bookstore sound like a good idea, but he does make a strong case that, with the right approach to finding a little corner of the market, it is still possible. Oh yes, and in the process, he gives a very enlightening history of how the bookselling industry has evolved over the past century.
