Hmm. I started out liking this book and it's main character. Lily (the writer's maternal grandmother). Mostly biography, partly fiction - I thought it was a good mix and the characters were interesting enough to hold my attention. However, I grew to rather dislike Lily as the book progressed. She cared for her children, but seemed to devote little attention to them and beat them, as she did some of the kids she taught in various one-room school houses. She sends her children off to boarding schools for "finishing" without regard to their feelings and seemed rather hard-hearted. I admired her independent spirit and gumption, but she had an unusual way of showing her affection for her children.
