really liked it

I definitely enjoyed it. At first, I had trouble convincing my older son to read it, because he was convinced that every dystopian novel is a "Hunger Games" wannabe, but he read it on a recent plane trip and we had a great in-depth discussion about the characters and their motivations.

The premise: Chicago of the future is a closed city-state. The citizenry really doesn't have any idea what is beyond their borders. They just know it's dangerous. Inside the city, humanity is divided into five factions based on moral imperatives. Candor, for instance, values truth above all else. They serve as lawyers and public speakers. Erudite values knowledge. They serve as teachers. Abnegation values self-denial and community service. They are the community's leaders, since they alone can be trusted not to be power-hungry.

Our heroine Tris is born into Abnegation, but during her choosing ceremony at age sixteen, she decides to join the Dauntless, who value fearlessness and serve as the society's soldiers and guards. The novel follows her through her initiation training, during which Tris discovers that their society is not as harmonious as she once believed. Making things even worse, Tris must keep her true aptitude secret. She is in a small minority of people who are divergent -- whose skills could suit them for more than one faction. What this means is not at first clear, but it will make Tris's life very dangerous.

Florrie So, are you going to write a dystopia now?

message 2: by Elias (last edited Aug 19, 2016 03:26PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Elias Well, it IS a Hunger Games wannabe. A very good one, but a Hunger Games wannabe nevertheless. Didn't stop me from enjoying it, though!

Airion When my fandoms collide!

Jacob Brausa Will you ever make a dystopia series?

Grace Thank you. I've been wondering whether or not to read this series. Now you have made me strongly want to read them. I also loved you PJO and Heroes of Olympus series. Thank you, once again.

Cadence Chorost I love your books!

Eve I have read the first three books and your last book in your Percy Jackson series and the first two books The Heroes of Olympus. I haven't gotten around to reading The Mark of Athena just yet, but I'm planning to. Along with The Battle of the Labyrinth. You're such an inspiration. I have always loved mythology!!

message 9: by A|_A¥A (new)

A|_A¥A My friend has read it, says it is an AMAZING book, and that I should be in Erudite.

How do you pronounce Erudite?

On behalf of someone I know I would like to say thank you for the PJ series.

Ayanna This is my absolute favourite book!! I love it so much!!❤️ I swear I ran around the room screaming when Tobais admitted his love to Tris so if you haven't already READ THIS BOOK❤️

Olivia Darcey I am TORTURED by the fact that I started this book on a school trip to the library, and, now that it is FINALLY time I can go to retrieve it, my family just wants a "stay at home day". I am dead, guys. So dead.

Anoushka we have WWE wrestling matches in the library to get the divergent book

Grace This did not persuade me to read the book I actually IT TOOK ME a while to pick up the book because I had heard a lot about it being a hunger games wannabe ane a copy of the plot line. Patricia Worthington This book is such a mystery

TobiasMaxonChord Yay someone who didn't rate this book so low...This is like one of my favourite series!(I also love the selection series) How someone can dislike this book? I don't know. Amazing series! I love all the characters (especially Tobias

Anabella Córdoba I found you again, Rick. I'm so happy that you have the same opinions that me.

Divergent as a BOOK was great. Divergent as a book SERIES was certainly not. Insurgent was mediocre and Allegiant was dreadful.

William Chen This is one of my favorite books. Tobias is my favorite character, but the others are good as well. It's a very sad series, but lots of action. I read it in less than three weeks and couldn't wait for the next book. This should be rated five stars, but well, I guess some people have different tastes. Not at all like the Hunger Games…

Sonia Sethi I completeky agree with you
And I had a hard time persuading friends to read it too.
I didn't read the book until just now. I know I am realy late in reading it but it thrills me to find out it is still extremely popuar.
Tris inspires me as she lives and strives even though she is divergeny.
One of the best books I have ever read.
I recommend it for ages 11+ seeing as I am near this age and fully understand it and t's meaning.

Sarah I've never read the Hunger Games. Me and my friend love the Percy Jackson books and Kane Chronicles and heroes of Olympus and the Magnus Chase. Has anybody read The City of Bones series by Cassandra Clare??

Anna Briggeman Anyone else falling inove with Four/Tobias?

Kayla This book is great I loved it, but it doesn't make sence because in the last book Tris dies and I don't think in any book that the main character should die.

Annabel But Kayla, if the MC dies, at least it's different. It stands out so it's not so cliched as the sterotypical hero ending

message 34: by *Molly Frannces* (new)

*Molly Frannces* Beautifully said, Uncle Rick!

Marjanah Islam I really really love ALL the books, but seriously, the ending? WHY!!!???

Marjanah Islam I quite like this review.

message 37: by Abhijit Patki (new)

Abhijit Patki yeah read the pj and heroes of olympus bravo rick riordan

luis david Villalobos Gonzalez .ñlñotu puede

Mggreenant I disagree with your reasoning about this book being a hunger games wannabe divergent is it's own category

Susie Davenport I love Rick riordan!!!

Dylan Fenton The first two were good. The last book was crap. And just cause the MC dies doesn’t make it different; it still sucks

B E M This was a friend's book origionally, but I decided to give it a try. The result: a great decision I doubt that I ever will regret. Divergent had ne hooked for hours on end, as with Insurgent. However, Allegiant was a loose bargain and I'm warning anyone who has thoroughly enjoyed the series and is planning on buying the triquel to NOT DO IT! The whole storyline seems to have been wrapped rather neatly in Insurgent and Allegiant feels surplus. I have a theory that Veronica was pressurised by the public to write this and perhaps didn't have enough ideas for a well-rounded story. And sorry if you are reading this, Veronica, I don't mean offense in any way. The missing star is probably thanks to too much romance and sex, but the rest of the book was great. Thank you.

Qndrew This book is trash and it is not fun. You should write books like Rick Riordian, I have fany of his books. You better make better books. You noob.

Qndrew This book is trash u should write better books. I'm sorry but its sooooooo bad I almost puked.
