Love Your God with All Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul
by J.P. Moreland, Dallas Willard
This book explained so much!
I was especially intrigued to learn about the rise of anti-intellectualism in the American church in the 18th and 19th centuries. Then with the onslaught of atheistic ideas in the 18th and 19th century in the fields of science (e.g Darwinism), Philosophy (e.g Nietzsche, Kant and Hume) and in theology itself (German higher criticism), the church retreated into the realm of the heart, as she was not intellectually prepared to tackle these challenges like she previously had been. She abandoned the realm of the mind, leaving it to secular thinkers. And Christianity is to this day still suffering from the effects of the "anti-intellectualism....of American revivalism" and the secular ideas that "made the world safe for atheists".
J.P Moreland makes a great case for loving "your God with all your mind" and he provides many insightful ideas for building up the Christian church intellectually.
A must read for all Christians feeling estranged in a secular society that was itself built on Christian principles.
