Didn't enjoy this as much as Kindred, but still a satisfying read.

As others have noted, at times the ideas presented in Butler's socially focussed aliens-meet-humans story were a bit stale, but her characters were compelling enough to keep me reading. I was made fairly uncomfortable by the way that, as the reader, I was drawn into going along with what amounted to several rapes (and the main characters all seemed perfectly okay with that? The ones who thought it was problematic were loony, dangerous Bad Guys? Uhmmm..), but I must acknowledge Butler's talent for transporting one into another mindset and set of social norms.

The lack of neat ending and wrapping up of storylines was frustrating, but may appeal to some. I like my stories more like stories, less like life, which fizzles out, drops plots as it sees fit, etc.
