I tried to read this book at least three different times and couldn't get past the first 20 pages. It somehow didn't seem urgent. Perhaps it was the Goodreads Audio bookclub that steered me to the was great. Within a track or two of the first CD I was convinced not only that the work was interesting, but that it was important. India, in its cruel poverty, ancient greatness, and in the incredible richness of its quarter of the world's humanity, is laid naked before us, with humor, irony, and a kind of truthfulness that will tear your heart out and inspire your artistic instinct. Adiga gets to that raw place that actually hurts: a wince becomes a smirk, a sob becomes a snigger. We are as close to pain as to hilarity. Oh India, show us your hidden places, and welcome to the world!
