really liked it
bookshelves: dystopian, juv-fiction

I've wanted to read this book for quite a while but the library never, ever has it in! Finally I found a copy and now I realize I should have just bought my own. I really liked it. The story takes place in America where strict population controls have been put in place in order to prevent famine. Each family is only allowed to have two children, no more. Luke is the third child in his family, and as such is forced to remain in hiding all the time. He isn't even allowed into rooms that have windows for fear that the Population Police will discover him. The penalty for a third child is $5 million or execution. But what happens when Luke realizes he is not the only shadow child living in the neighborhood? Margaret Peterson Haddix has become one of my favorite children's authors and I look forward with eager anticipation to reading the rest of this series.
