I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fascinating to learn about a character who was larger than life while alive but because of his early demise has faded in the annals of history. Millard does an excellent job of navigating the madness of the 1880 Republican Convention and political landscape then correlating it to the madness of Garfield's eventual assassin. Although the main focus is Garfield's assassination there are some other historical tidbits that come into play. Such as Thad Lincoln's dubious distinction, Alexander Graham Bell's struggle to invent a machine to save the President's life, and a fascinating look at medical debates of the age.
