I really wanted to love this book. It has a great concept, but unfortunately I just felt like it wasn't well executed and I ended up feeling like the book was just okay. Not bad exactly, but not great either.
The positives:
The concept.
I thought that the concept of this book was good. A girl who is afraid of giving away her heart because she's been abandoned in the past finally falls for someone - only he may not be able to stay with her, no matter how much he wants to. It's the perfect set-up for a heart-wrenching story, and there are moments when it achieves this end. I just didn't feel like there were enough of those moments.
Moya.
Moya was a great protagonist. She was a tough girl who didn't put up with anyone's nonsense. She knew she had intimacy issues, but she was okay with that and didn't feel like she needed to live up to anyone's expectations. I liked her relationship with her best friend Vanessa and I thought that she acted and talked like a realistic college-aged student (some of her dialogue was fun because of this!). I only wished that I had gotten a little more time to really understand Moya's feelings about her abandonment and about Branden.
What I wasn't crazy about:
Felt rushed.
This book was a very quick read, but it almost felt too quick. I just didn't feel like there was enough time to develop the story or the characters well enough. Because of this, the romance also felt rushed to me. I didn't really understand what drew Moya to Branden. What was so different about him and why was he the one guy who she was drawn to (even before he started pursuing her)? I wanted a bit more push and pull between the characters - more chemistry. I guess I didn't really feel the connection between Moya and Branden, and since the romance was the main feature of the book, this made it a miss for me.
Could use editing.
This book had a number of wording and grammar issues that made the story awkward at times. I felt that this was a good effort at a first book and I hate to discourage a debut author, but there were parts of the book that just felt a bit rough to me.
True romance fans might really enjoy this book. It has all of the elements of a sweet romance, but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. 2.5/5 stars.
