This book was every bit as good as a friend said. To emphasize how good - I generally do not enjoy books written in the first person, but this is one story that had to be told that way.

Yelena's life has been a story of survival, so becoming the Commander's food taster and risking death by poison is a big step up from an immediate hanging. She learns quickly and is resourceful, and there are some opportunities for escape, but there's this little matter of needing a daily antidote against a very painful & deadly poison she was given, so she bides her time and learns more skills, and in the process gains the first friends she's had since her early orphan years. Add strong magic and political intrigue and really good characters, and you have a very good first book in a series. Looking forward to further adventures for Yelena in Magic Study.
