I fell hook, line and sinker for Barry after reading The Secret Scripture and am determined to read nothing else until I have finished every word he's ever written. He writes like an angel (as so many have already said), sentences of such simple beauty I want to read them again and again. A Long Long Way follows the experiences of Irish soldiers fighting as British troops during World War One, while at home their own country faces conflict and violence in the search for independence. Willie Dunne starts out young and naive and though the war and problems at home steadily eat away him, he never becomes bitter, finding comfort in the bonds with his fellow soldiers. Like A Secret Scripture it's ultimately a story of betrayal and prejudice.

Amanda Have just finished reading Secret Scripture and I loved it too, although I kind of knew where he was going with the ending long before it came.
