it was amazing
bookshelves: fiction, favorites, fiction-southern
Read in January, 2007

Perhaps it is the area described, or the historical subject, but the epic odyssey undertaken by the Confederate deserter trying to make his way back through the Appalachians grabbed me and never let me go. One of my favorite books. His prose is about as perfect as I can remember reading, and I fell into every page. Sounds like a blurb, but it isn't; I was mesmerized by this book. Only a few other writers seem to get their hooks in me as well as he did. Frazier studied at the University of South Carolina. I have been in many of the areas he described and I love them.
