The Return of the Soldier

Perhaps somewhat unfairly viewed through the lens of current neurological and psychological knowledge and the now absurdly overplayed motif of the suffering amnesiac, I found myself tripping over many sections of the book. The book has its merits, without a doubt. West is a stunning stylist and crafts beautiful passages. Perhaps a writer better suited for whimsical musing on the nature of human longing than providing insight into the depths of mental trauma. Problems with the story aside, I am certainly interested in reading further West's other, later work.
