An absolutely amazing book. After his mother's death, Steve Luxenberg investigates the suggestion that she was not an only child as she always claimed. What he discovers is Annie, his mother's sister, who was institutionalized as a young woman. Why, he wants to discover, did his mother keep such a secret for her entire life and what was the cost to her (and her family) of holding tight to her secret.

A beautiful family history, record of immigration to the United States in the early 1900's, and social history of the first half of the 20th Century, this book is not to be missed.
