Wolf Hall (Thomas Cromwell, #1)
For the first half of this book I was treading water. Which Thomas which which? And which one was Lord of Norfolk and who was the Duke of Suffolk? But I'm glad I kept going. Some of the writing is stunning (I think I'll never forget the description of Cromwell's daughters Christmas pageant wings) and the narrative compelling. My pre-Mantel knowledge of the Tudors was of the divorced-beheaded-died-divorced-beheaded-survived variety. Wolf Hall has replaced this with incredibly nuanced portraits.
