Steve Mouzon's latest publication, New Media for Designers + Builders, gives readers a clearly written introduction and roadmap for using all the latest communication technology to advance the business of place-making, and the careers of place-makers. Based on his own experiences in using countless commercial and free platforms, products, and services, Mouzon lays out his case for the best picks in each of twelve new media “nodes.” Along the way, he gives a rationale for prioritizing (and justifying) time spent on establishing and maintaining a presence in each node, based on the likely level of resulting professional. New Media deftly pares the subject down to the most important points and convincingly argues not only that the typical professional in the place-making disciplines can use all these techniques (without assistance from IT staff), but must use them in order to stay relevant and enjoy a successful career.

Wisely, Mouzon has chosen to create this document simultaneously in two widely accepted electronic formats: the ubiquitous Adobe pdf format, and the Apple iBook format. Both options are saturated with hyperlinks that easily triple the volume of information available to the reader. Not everything about New Media is positive however. Early on, Mouzon seems to promise that the book's approach will be platform neutral in order to have the broadest applicability, but it becomes evident pretty quickly that he's an ardent Apple adherent. Also, throughout New Media, the focus is almost entirely on professionals working in the private sector; a more balanced coverage that addressed some of the unique challenges facing public sector professionals would help the book appeal to a broader audience. Finally, in describing his purpose for writing the book Mouzon explains that the old “Era of the Company” is being rapidly supplanted by the “Age of the Idea.” He goes on to state that the three key ideals of the Era of the Company were quality, speed, and economy, and that these are being replaced in the Age of the Idea by connectedness, patience, and generosity. His arguments in this section of the book tend to be short on evidence, and at best, questionable in their conclusions.

Fortunately, for those not interested in the philosophical side of the subject, that section is neither essential nor detrimental, to the core message of the book: if you want to go far in the field of place-making you'll need to develop basic competence in promoting your work through the many rapidly evolving forms of new media.
