This wonderful look into a negro legend is just exactly right for what it is. Julius Lester brings fresh new compassion to the famous tale, letting it come through with full force exactly what it means for people to need a real hero, a larger-than-life someone to hang one's hat on and be able to say, "At least we've got___" (in this case, John Henry). Anyone who has looked up to Michael Jordan or Martin Luther King, Jr. or Abraham Lincoln or George Washington or anyone else, and thought (and hoped) that they could do no wrong, will be able to appreciate this soul-stirring story of a hero who really lived up to the title. "John Henry" is one of the finest picture books that I have ever read.
