it was ok
bookshelves: historical-fiction, story
Read in January, 2005

I wasn't impressed when I read it, and I'm not impressed now that Waters is up for the Booker for her new novel. Maybe the new one's better?

Tipping the Velvet seemed like the Hot Topic of lesbian historical fiction: it's awesome when one comes to your local mall, if that's all you have. But the goods are fairly shoddy and the wider world has so much more to offer. It's nice to see gays in times and places other than the late 20th-21st century USA. That, and a semi-Dickensian story of tragedy and triumph, were about all this book had going for it.
