** spoiler alert ** Historical love story about slavery and the struggle to let God take the lead in our lives. It is hard to put down. Caroline Fletcher is a women that lived in the time of slavery in the late 1880's in Virginia. Her father owned slaves, but they treated Caroline as family and their loyalty was strong. When her mother passed away when she was in her teens, she is sent up north to live with her aunt. She hears about the abolishment movement for the freedom of slaves, but finds that the people up north are still prejudice toward freed slaves in their separation. She returns to Virginia right before Pres. Lincoln is elected and the union is divided. She is so full of energy to speak against slavery that she is ready to hand out literature that she got up north until she is told by Charles tells her that it is illegal to hand this out. She only meets him after hitting him with her bag while he was trying to manhandle a black boy who stole an apple. She gives him piece of her mind after he helps to pick up the fliers. The have an arguement and leave sleaming at each other. They eventually fall in love agreeing to disagree on the slavery issue. Then war breaks out. caroline knows loved ones on either side and looses Charles (her fiance), Jonathan (her dear cousin), Father (to running blockage ships), Robert ( her friend from the north), and Josiah (her mammy's secret husband), to fighting in some capacity in the war. As the war continues Caroline doesn't choose sides until, Robert becomes a prisoner of war and is dire need. He has her become a traitor and spy to end the war and free the slaves. the whole time she has inner tormoil because of the risk the betrayal has for her family, not to mention herself. When Charles does come home he won't forgive her for the betrayal of Virginia, but after she reads her wallpaper account of her reasoning and has talked to Josaih, who he owns his life too....he comes around.
