Canine units have been used by the United States in wartime since World War I. This book portrays in a sensitive and moving way, the close relationship between the dog and the handler. Set during the Vietnam War, Cracker is sent to Vietnman to help detect booby traps, bombs, and ambushes. She is devoted to Rick, her handler. Will they survive their military assignment there? Action packed, emotionally charged, and suspenseful, this novel realistically portrays the authentic and gritty details of war. It's a compassionate, heartfelt story, part of it from the dog's perspective. A wonderful recommendation for tween boys and anyone interested in war dogs.
