Tanya Huff has done it again, with another gripping fantasy starring a strong female character with a loyal(wolfish) love interest. Aydori, a small independent country on the border of the Evil Empire, is run by female mages and male werewolves who can change shape at will, not tied to the moon. The Evil Emperor, informed by a crazy soothsayer prophecy, kidnaps 5 higher level mage rulers and attacks the border, killing several of their kin and loved ones. Huff seamlessly switches from the 5 mage rulers as they are taken across the border to the palace for "experimentation," to the werewolf Tomas who runs across a female mage who is both greater and lesser than all other mages. Mirian had great potential but did so poorly at all kinds of magic that she was not asked back to school. Still, she is mistaken for someone important and captured by the other side. She escapes but then decides to save the 5 others, with the help of Tomas. There's enough in the plot to make it different from the standard "girl & boy go on a big dangerous trip" plot. I enjoyed several of Huff's turns and twists, as well as her characterizations. Very absorbing!
