Lots of adventure, good versus evil, a school for unusual children with its own unusual traditions, menacing family members, magical powers, and friends working together. It all comes together in a satisfying way that sets up for loads of equally fun sequels.

I'd recommend it for J.K. Rowling and Eva Ibbotson fans. Maybe even Well-Wished by Hardinge, though that was darker and little more contemporary-seeming. Charlie Bone could be now, but it could also be ten years ago, and could almost be twenty years ago. In any case, the when is not an important part of the story.

One of those adventure series the kids seem to like. Not wildly popular, but solidly so.
