Kathy Mallory was saved from the streets and adopted by Louis Markowitz, a New York detective. Now Markowitz is dead, and his killer may be responsible for a number of other deaths. Kathy, now a police officer herself, begins a search for his killer, and an investigation into her own psyche.

It's a welcome change to see older women portrayed as more than one-dimensional "little old ladies"/victims. The writing is occasionally over-descriptive, but hey it's a first book so that can be forgiven.

O'Connell has created a very interesting character in Sergeant Mallory and I will look out for the sequel The Man Who Cast Two Shadows.
