Whew. Finally finished. This book was more academic than I was prepared for. That said, it is a really thorough and well-researched view of what we can and can't know about Ann Shakespeare, and how the popular view of her and William Shakespeare's marriage as loveless and a trap for Shakespeare is not based in fact, but in misogyny. I read a lot of fictionalized accounts of Shakespeare and his marriage recently, and really enjoyed reading this as a counterpoint to those. It is not a fast or easy read, though.
