really liked it
bookshelves: young-adult-fiction

It's such a rare thing for me to like a sequel as much as the original, but Suzanne Collins did not disappoint! The plot is wonderful, the characters have depth, the tone is so very appropriate for a story being told from the perspective of an 11-year-old boy.

I wouldn't recommend the series for early readers--younger than 10 probably--because there are parts that might be too scary for them. I would, however, love for my children to read them when they're old enough. I love how Gregor is always faced with hard choices between right and wrong. He learns to overcome his fears without actually getting rid of his fears--just by realizing that what he has to do is more important than being afraid. He finds courage by doing hard things. He is humble and kind and helps others overcome their prejudices through his own innocence.

I can't wait to read the next one!
