While I loved the period-ness and the setting of this part of the Elemental Masters series, way too much of the story itself was filler. While this was probably emphasized by the fact the book was read to me (and a source of much amusement), there were several parts that read like laundry lists, mostly every time Reggie meets any group of more than one, we get excruciating detail about these people who never really appear in the story again. That, and a too-pat, too-quick ending soured me on an otherwise enchanting retelling, thick with history and lovable, if predictable characters.
