I wanted to like this book. Raymond Chandler and Marlowe take on Hollywood - what could go wrong? Unfortunately, Chandler's prose as at its most self-indulgent, and his plot is contrived. Marlowe is whisked through the book by a series of events, fortunate and unfortunate, with little detective work needed. There are scenes in here worth reading - Chapter 30 is beautifully-written, although I'm still not sure what happened in it. The showdown between Marlowe and the house detective at the hotel is both classic Marlowe and great comedy. But at times I felt like Chandler was writing parody of his own genre, rather than the movie business. Read a lot of Chandler, but leave this one until last, if you read it at all.
