Having never read Sarah Dessen, I didn't know what to expect from this book, which kind of has a familiar plot: studious girl spends summer at the beach and meets new people, comes out of her shell. But I was impressed particularly by the novel and its complexity, mainly of the characters. They were fully three-dimensional, with interesting ideas and nice ways of interacting. The characters are in that in-between stage of graduation from high school and beginning college, and readers who are older will easily remember that time in their own lives. But at the same time, some of their concerns are universal, not just focused narrowly on one phase of life. A novel that will be engaging reading for any age, 18 or 40.
