The best part: his descriptions of living poor in 1950s/1960s America -- the grinding humiliation and the constant struggle with crappy cars, appliances, cars. The not-so-good part: long, boring chapters about the bosses who hired young Joe and about various aunts and uncles. Did he really need to devote 30 pages on Len, the shifty clothing store owner? I skipped some pretty big chunks.
