did not like it

NO. I'm sorry, but no. I think I might have enjoyed this book were it not for the unbearable literary theory coursing through it like poison in the veins. Byatt used to run in the academic literary schools in the UK, and I guess it scarred her for life. Literary theory is NOT the end of the world nor the entire measure of a person. Why does the unbearable acquisitioner Mortimer Cropper simply have to be American? Why does Leonora have to be sooo untenably feminist? Fergus? Blackadder? Beatrice Nest? All of them revolting personifications of some sort of theory. And good old Roland and Maud, they just want a nice clean white bed... okay.

Bah. I rant. BUT! One redeeming star for Christabel LaMotte's fairy tales. The one slightly enjoyable aspect of the book.
