** spoiler alert ** I have so many negative thoughts about this book. So here's a list of complaints:

a.) Either this was very poorly translated or very poorly written. I've heard arguments for both. Tons of unnecessary details (all the coffee stops!), repetition of things we already know, paragraphs about nothing just petering out. Even at times when I was enjoying the plot, I felt as though I had to fight my way through dull writing.

b.) For as dull as it is in most parts, this book is waaaay too over the top in others. Butt plugs?! What is my reaction to that even supposed to be? (For the curious: it was a big old WTF face.)

While I think there is a place for graphic rape and torture scenes (more in film than in books, because it's not as hard to convey intent in a multi-dimensional visual format), I didn't see the need for them here. Salander being the survivor of rape and perpetrator of revenge did not make me root for her here -- as it might have in a film -- because it was only a tangential and forgotten part of the story, rather than being necessary to it. We don't see her dealing with the aftereffects of her abuse at all; she's not fundamentally changed because of it, aside from taking her revenge. Which leads me to:

c.) Salander's supposed to be this amazingly kickass character that I'll just automatically love, right? Umm, no. Aside from knowing that she's a good investigator, sexual but detached, has Asperger's and is kind of ruthless, I felt like she could have been anyone. Really. I looked for some piece of insight or indication that she is a dynamic character that would make me like her, but it never happened. Dressing her up like a punk in a sea of suits is not enough characterization. Perhaps in further books and with time, I'd feel attached to her like I've felt to other mystery series characters, but I'm not really tempted to read on.

d.) The only reason I was invested in the mystery of Harriet Vanger's disappearance is because I thought she'd been murdered. When it turned out she was still alive and had skipped town, I wanted to throw the damn book at a wall.

e.) How freaking over the top was it for the murderer to have a Hostel-style torture chamber right in his house? Does anyone find this seriously scary, instead of laughably stupid? Moreover, does this sort of thing exist outside the world of comic book super villains? Better make sure THAT room's locked when company comes over.

I enjoyed this book so little that after the solution to the Harriet mystery wrapped up, I just skimmed to the end. I have no idea what happened with the Wennerstrom affair, nor do I particularly care. I'm assuming that Blomqvist got some scandalous scoop and super busted him, because that's what happens in utterly predictable books like this one.

Nick Johnson Spot on. Seems like the author died early as a career move! The book seems to evoke either 1 or 4 star responses. You can read the rants of the one star brigade elsewhere on this site.I was daft enough to read the other two; to see if they got better but in the end to convince myself it could not get worse. Regrettably it did. I want the hours I spent reading these book back if and when I get reincarnated or whatever.

rachel I briefly considered reading the rest of the series to see if it gets any better (e.g. Will the excess have been cut out? Will I ever care about Salander? Or any other character?) but I see it doesn't. Thanks for saving me the time. :)

Melissa I had some really mean things planned to say about Salander because every time I had to read about her ignoring someone or freezing up or whatever, I wanted to throw the book at the wall, but then I suddenly remembered, "Oh yeah - was raped," and thought I should be a little more charitable. But is that really the only point of her getting raped, some clumsy attmept to make her being a jerk more beliveable? I whole-heartedly agree, the rape was so gratuitous & she remains so unsympathetic in spite of it.

rachel See, I thought I read in the press materials that the explanation for her lack of social awareness is Asperger's. Which as a fact would make me sympathetic to her...if it was something the book ever bothered to talk about. (Please tell me if I'm wrong, btw, in remembering that the book rarely or maybe just once comes out and says she has AS.)

So there are even two dimensions in which Larsson could have explored her character -- the trauma of her rape and her implied autism. And yet she still manages to remain a flat character. Blech, this series.

Melissa I remember Mikael thinking to himself, "Hmm, Asperger's?" and I think that all it came up. Same thing as the rape as far as I'm concerned, if I'm supposed to think she's some big badass in spite of her many traumas & problems which actually make her come off as an antisocial brat, mention them more than in passing so I can remember why she's to be pitied.

rachel Yeah! I really wish the connection between her psyche and the things that have happened to her had been made. If you're going to give a character a traumatic background, I am going to want to see how she's intrinsically changed and developed because of it.

Melissa I'm going to to continue with the series - perhaps she does develop somehow? I will let you know.

rachel A few of my friends have read the whole series and said that she does. I just don't know if I want to go on to The Girl Who Played With Fire when there are so many other books I want to read that aren't part of a series I already know that I dislike.

Franky Yeah, agree with you on the "mystery" that isn't really a mystery (Harriet's death), and the Hostel-like torture chamber. Also, I thought the ending was a little Scooby Doo-ish and hokey.

Vinyessa What ending?! I barely consider it one. I had to fight my way through the "ending" just to see if something better was coming, and it never arrived.

Matt I too am trying to figure out why this book made people freak out so much. I think I just kept reading it because I was flying right through it and figured I might as well finish it. I didn't find the plot twists particularly interesting, I felt like I was being beat over the head being told what I was supposed to think about each character. Overall I think it's so popular because it's easy as hell to read and it has a crazy "twist" that got people onto it. People seem to be very impressed with the computer hacking in it and I think the shock value of the extreme sexual violence and misogyny gave it a boost in popularity for some reason.

As to your question about what happens to the whole Wennerstrom thing, it's pretty lame. Basically the last chunk of the book feels like the author went "Oh yeah! That whole thing....let's see here" and basically sets it up so that Salander hacks the crap out of him, steals all his money and digs up all the dirt on him. Blomqvist masterfully writes up the dirt, publishes it, ruins the guy and the guy kills himself.

My own

Tiberius Bones duuuude... i wish you had written spoiler alert. :(

rachel I hid the whole review for spoilers.

Sam @rachel my sentiments exactly, utter rubbish. I take it you're not going to read part 2 and 3. I couldn't handle the sandwich and coffee breaks in the book. My Swedish friend tells me this is a Swedish thing to do so Larsson is apparently over playing the stereotype.

Dixie Diamond If she was supposed to be an Aspie, he didn't get that right, either.

This review rocks, by the way. I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a book.

Sandra I tried to get through this but it was way tooooo boaring for me. I had to put it away and just forget it....seemes like the whole world loved this series but I did not!

I totally agree with this review, Lisbeth rubbed me the wrong way (especially how she treated/what names she called other women.

Lailee I cant agree more with you on the poor writing! I mean how badly translated could it be? I blame it on the writing.... Unnecessary details and repetitive words bored me to death and I just stopped reading. English is not my first language but I can say with confidence that the English translation of this book has the poorest writing I have ever known!

Janese Jackson Just an FYI for anyone who cares, the rape of Salander and her revenge become vital to the plot in the next two books. Not si much in terms of character development though.

Dave Dead on. This book is unmitigated garbage.

Sparkle I read (I believe it was in the NY Times) the original title was, "Men Who Hate Women". The book makes far more sense in that context but it is still lacking

I was hoodwinked into believing this was a great mystery//thriller. Far from it. The author used 'shock' as intrigue and unrelated dry details as puzzle pieces to the mystery. It was a fail, fail. There were too many details and events that did not further the story or enrich the characters.

I wish I could get my money and time back. My key learning is to sample before buying, regardless of the recommendation.

Krystal Vo although I loved the book, I died laughing at your review and could completely agree with you on all the points!
