really liked it
Read in October, 2009

This was a little dry at first. I found it difficult to keep up with all the different political figures with similar sounding names, especially in Hirohito's early years. The fleshing out of his early years was also weak because it seemed that the author was going much more on assumption than documented fact.

Right around the time of the escalation of the China war, this book gets really good. This time period has a lot more hard evidence for the author to draw upon, and I found the subject matter generally more interesting. It served as a good, though sometimes dense, introduction to modern Japan.
