This is an epic conspiracy story that could have only happened in the nineteenth century, when the poor had few rights and many of the wealthy had no scruples. Megan Trevallyn, a clever and highly principled governess, had such a diabolical scheme plotted against her that you have to read it to believe it! I knew, from reading her first book, "Fire in the Rock" that Rita Stella Galieh puts great effort into her research. I always enjoy the appearance in novels of real, historical people. In this case, Caroline Chisholm made a real difference in the heroine's life at a crucial moment. Toward the end I was a little confused when the hero seemed to put two and two together and figure out the great injustice that had remained concealed for year after year, but I have the feeling his thought processes will be revealed in the sequel to this, which I will await with interest.
