This may be a very good cookbook, but I didn't enjoy reading it; I found it a mix of frustrating and interesting:

1. I don't like the persona Trilling presents, so I don't enjoy reading the sections between chapters.

2. The recipes look very authentic, which is a win, even if it makes them too complicated for my kitchen...

3. BUT I had hoped for more food anthropology -- why are these methods, ingredients, etc. traditional? Trilling tells a lot of stories but they feel very shallow, "Oh, I learned this recipe from this awesome native woman who is nearly 100 years old and she said this very charming thing." I had been hoping for a sense of how the land and the history of Oaxaca created its cuisine.
