Hemon layers two stories related to the eastern european immigrant experience in america, specifically Chicago. One arc follows Bosnian diaspora after 1990s Bosnian War, and the other follows the emigration of Russian Jews after a specific pogrom in 1900s. He ties the two together from the point of view of a Bosnian-born writer who emigrated to Chicago before the former and who is investigating the latter. At turns an angry, amusing, sad, and insightful exploration of misunderstanding, identity, and loss of homeland. Stunning.
