This book provided a glimpse into the lives of one Italian-American family and theatrical royalty from the 50's to the 70's. The chapters were set up into different time periods and provided an understanding of the devotion it took to be a star to the detriment of family and other personal relationships. It seemed that in the background family was still at the heart of this touching story.

Carries Manning's mother passed away and she feels lost. She seems to be searching for herself; who she is and what she wants from life. She has never finished anything flipping from one thing to another cancelling her marriage to Howie three days before the wedding even though she loves him and still refers to him as one of her best friends.

This is the stage the author sets as Carrie delves into the past of her family.

Her mother Rose had been completely devoted to charity work; helping others seemed to be her calling in life even though it meant many sacrifices. She gave more to the orphans and charities than she gave to her own daughter and they lived in vitual poverty.
Carrie's grandmother, Lu was a glamorous Broadway star and her father was the great Bobby Manning, a Broadway genius who died when Carrie was only 3 years old. Rose was raised by her Nanna Mifalda until her death when Rose was only 13 then Rose had to live with her mother Lu. Following Bobby's death when Carrie was only 3 years old, Rose never saw or spoke to her mother again. This was the big question; what had happened to break all contact?

Carrie's quest for answers began when she found her Great Uncle Paulie, Lu's brother. He told Carrie that in the search for answers, the story must begin with her Great Grandmother Mifalda who had come to America as a 16 year old bride. He told Carrie about his mother's life and life with Lu. This led Carrie to Lu's manager George who filled in the blanks about the death of Mifalda, Rose's teenage years when she lived with Lu, and her marriage to Bobby Manning. The questions ended when Carrie met her grandmother Lu, got all of the answers, and was able to move on with her life.
