This lovely book was inspired by the lush garden of wildflowers and grasses that grew over the derelict elevated railway the "High Line" on the west side of Manhattan. (In the '90s the community rallied to preserve and reuse the sturdy industrial structure; construction began in April 2006 to turn it into a park, and in June 2009 it was officially opened as a beautiful public space 30 feet above street level.) And if you knew nothing of the High Line, this is a sweet "eco-fable" about how one little person can beautifully transform his world. The illustrations are terrific, and some reviewers here advise allowing your child to look over the illustrations first, there are many details to explore, and they'll get the message before you read the story aloud.
