Fast-paced, thrilling, though not what I'd call a "deep" book, The Maze Runner was a fun and exciting read for a Sunday morning. There were definitely parts where I couldn't put it down.

I wish, however, that Dashner hadn't covered up the kid's swearing with made-up words -- they were jarring and irritated me every other sentence. It was just weird, and I think it would bother teens, too. The kids retained the rest of their vocabulary, why did they need these words introduced to them when they came through the Box? I doubt that in two years new vocab for these words would have evolved. It feels to me as though some editors reading the copy thought parents might find the real words objectionable. Blood and violence are fine, but the swearing had to go, right?

I'll be on the lookout for the sequel (there's a bit of a cliffhanger at the end) and, in the meantime, will work to get over my issues with the way the author or editors monkeyed with the kids' language.

If you're going to say something, just say it!
