This book challenged my mind. I can be so weak-minded at times. As the title says [in support of Matthew 22:37] we are to love God with ALL of our minds. I naturally want to take the easy road, the broad path, that most people want to follow. However, Jesus taught we are to follow the narrow path that leads to life. I had to pray and focus before reading these chapters of this book as my mind didn't want to engage. But as the Spirit enabled and empowered, I was able to benefit a lot from this book.
There are 4 parts to it: (1) Why the Mind Matters, (2) How to Develop a Mature Christian Mind, (3) What a Mature Christian Mind Looks Like, and (4) Guaranteeing a Future for the Christian Mind.
Moreland did a good job explaining how we have gotten to this point of immaturity in the faith. The advice he gave is difficult, and maybe idealistic to some people. But the fact remains that something DOES need to be done to contend for the faith (Jude 3). Apologetics is his focus. Some people I know are not very fond of this, and I see their reasons for it, but if done properly can be VERY beneficial to both believers [who can properly understand the faith we claim to believe] and nonbelievers [who could possibly become convinced of the rationality and legitimate reasons for believing] alike.
I appreciate how JP Moreland brought up real issues that Christians face and how God has used him to confront individuals and groups in the culture who don't think like him. He helped inspire our imaginations as to how to think 'Christianly' [as he says] when confronted with things like moral relativism, scientism, and skepticism.
The end of the book provided some glimpses of possibilities for supporting God's people in the local church to be able to mature in the faith. This book caused me to think that some mentors of mine have read this book as I've seen some of his suggestions brought to my local context before (i.e. bringing in Christian scholars to come and speak to the congregation about a particular topic). This book gives me some things to chew on by myself and with other Christian leaders God has put in my life. It's beyond exciting to think what could happen as we love God with all of our minds!
