Despite being from whole different parts of the country (Texas Hill Country and the Ozarks, respectively), one can't help but feel that James Crumley's recurring protagonist, C.W. "Sonny" Sughrue, and Doyle Redmond, hero of Give Us a Kiss, are "butthole cousins"; that is, in Doyle's words "a cousin, sure enough, but such a distant, hard-to-trace blood mixin'...it means you're kin, of a sort". Both men are educated, "sensitive" Rednecks, who atavistically drop all trappings of civilization as the bodies start piling up. Both are also one hell of a lot of fun to follow around, at least vicariously.
