This third volume of the Fables mythos functions a bit more as an anthology than it does a unified story. We start out with Bag O' Bones, a tale featuring Jack during the final days of the Civil War. After realizing his adopted Confederacy is going to lose, thwarting his attempt to win glory and marry a wealthy southern belle, Jack deserts and heads back towards Fabletown. His shortcut through the bayou proves to be more than he bargained for, however, and his ensuing adventure pits him against "Nick Slick" (the Devil in disguise) and Death himself for the life of a lovely young lady. We then return to the present in A Sharp Operation. Bigby and company have a problem: a Mundy has shown up at the gates of Fabletown claiming to know their secret....the Fables are vampires! Despite the laughability of the accusation, it is close enough to the truth that some will believe it, and that is enough to make him dangerous. But how far is Bigby willing to go to protect the Fables' secret? Storybook Love is the main story in this volume, taking up half the book and advancing the main plot a bit. After recent humiliations at Bigby's hands, Bluebeard is plotting to take him out. After a Liliputian spy discovers that he is hiding Goldilocks in his apartment, Bluebeard is forced to take action sooner than planned....and Snow White is going to have to disappear as well. Bigby and Snow are going to have to rely on all of Bigby's wolfish abilities if they want to get out of this one.... Finally, Barleycorn Brides rounds out the volume with a tale of the origins of Fabletown's Liliputian community.

Note: As sometimes happens with those books in the Vertigo imprint, this is an R-rated comic book. Language, violence, and even a bit of nudity show up in this book. Not for kids.
