This was a strange book where no one ended up happy. Yes, there was a horrible war and many soldiers died or were gravely injured. But somehow the 50s came along with great growth and prosperity. Yet the characters in this book seem stuck in all the pain of the 30s and 40s with none of the pleasure. Added to that was an unresolved story of escaping slaves. Then the story was not told sequentially but jumped around with no clues as when this was happening or who was speaking. I do not really recommend this book.
