bookshelves: mystery

The first of four in a series, "Field of Blood" evinces both a bold claim on historical sweep and a loose purchase on causality. Sometimes I wonder what exactly is going on, who knows what, why they choose to do what they do, and what consequence that has on the story. Still, as always, I love Mina's portraits of quirky, complicated characters, her detailed and layered exploration of a changing city, and her commitment to doubt, passion, and perturbed exasperation.
