it was amazing

This is one of those books I've been meaning to read for years, but only came to recently. It's going to be one of my all time favourites, I suspect.

There's just something about an insane ship's captain which makes for great literary fodder. (Trust me on this!) think Ahab, if you want another example.

Wouk captures so perfectly both the claustrophobic tension of life on board a ship, as well as the sense of place and time. So well crafted and authentic is his dialogue, and so well researched and meticulously planned is his plot, that it would be easy to read this book - despite the disclaimer in the foreward - as a work of creative non-fiction.

A modern classic. And for very good reason, as it turns out.
