Either this writer is really hitting her stride or she's got a new contract with her publisher so she's less worried about what she's saying, or something. Whatever it is, she is writing much more descriptively and she gets in much more feeling in terms of little political zingers and character than I recall from earlier books in this series. There's stuff to read here beyond just a linear plot advancement, and that takes this a step beyond the procedurals.

I did lose patience once or twice, though: just towards the end I wanted the protagonist to spend a little less time on the obvious-but-unproductive attribution of the case to wildlife and do a little more creative thinking. She stalled just a bit too long in the suspect-everyone phase before she moved on, and that dragged a little.

Jennie I should read this -- we're thinking of backpacking Isle Royale late next summer/early fall. And hey, if I could listen to Ice Run because of a trip to Mackinac....

Savannah I thought of your having mentioned your plans when I started reading this, actually. And yes, you totally should read it: it's got great atmosphere for the trip, even though it's obvs set in the depths of winter. I'm coming up on half through it, and I think she's really hitting her stride as a writer, plus I like all of the little social/political zingers she's tossing out from time to time.
