really liked it

Of the three 'Culture' novels that I have read (consider Phoebus, Player of Games, and Use of Weapons) this is my favorite. I like the idea of a barbarian interstellar empire based on the playing of a complex war game, I liked the Bobby Fisher-esque protagonist, and I liked that the book was not oriented towards military style violence. Also, I myself can relate much more easily to a game playing intellectual than to the spies and mercenaries of the other two books. If I was a teenager, maybe I would think differently.
