In Because I Am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas, Anke is the only child spared her father's abuse. She helplessly watches him torment her siblings and feels unloved without her father's "attention." At volleyball practice, she discovers a voice buried inside her which provides the courage she needs to survive at home.

Chaltas' poetic verse narration and accurate portrayal of domestic abuse easily invoke compassion. Survivors especially will recognize its accuracy. She makes the power of voice very clear: no matter the situation, no matter the consequences, speaking up against an abuser is always worth it.
