I really enjoyed this book. I can't really compare it in terms of "enjoyment" with the author's first book, Between Shades of Gray, which I read several years ago. (That book was heartbreaking and covers history that I didn't know about. But strangely enough, I never felt any emotional connection the characters.) While the plot and historical setting were the emphasis with BSOG, I felt like the characters were much stronger in this one. And the plot and setting were pretty interesting, too. Considering the main character's mother is a prostitute (and Josie is friendly with everyone at the local brothel and spends a decent amount of time there), the author handled all of that in a pretty classy (and clean) way, while still making the atmosphere feel realistic. I flew through this was an addictive read and the short chapters made for fast reading. I'm looking forward to reading Ruta Sepetys' newest book!
