really liked it
bookshelves: poetry-poetics

Some of the poems in this collection are just too raw -- too immediate, too unedited, not interested enough in the audience as much as the act of recording.

Almost all the poems in section one, though, are brilliant and extremely powerful. It's hard not to read the poet's death into this: if one assumes the poems are arranged in the book in the chronological order in which they were written (which they are almost certainly not), it makes sense the book's first poems have the most control.

Regardless, it made a strong impression, and it's sad to lose such a good poet.
